Lost "The Incident" Opening Scene

This is likely the best opening scene in a television show to date. Discuss...

Man, what a great scene. I loved the music, so mysterious.

Great scene to say the least! Wonderfully compliments (and is complimented by) the (almost) final scene - the one with Ben, Jacob and Impostor Locke. I have watched them many times since last Wed.

Speaking of re-watches, I just watched 'The Brig' from Season 3. A few lines of dialogue really jumped out at me in light of The Incident.

============================

S3E19 - The Brig

BEN: The magic box is a metaphor, John. I can't show you anything until you can show me that you're ready and willing to be one of us. When people join us here on this Island, they need to make a gesture of free will, of commitment. That's why you're gonna have to kill your father.

----later------

SAWYER: Son of a bitch. You really kidnapped the little bastard. We ain't killing him, Locke.

LOCKE: Whatever you say, James.

============================

S5E12 - Dead is Dead

ALEX: Listen to me, you bastard! I know that you're already planning to kill John again, and I want you to know that if you so much as touch him, I will hunt you down and destroy you. You will listen to every word John Locke says, and you will follow his every order. Do you understand?

----later------

S5E17 - The Incident Part 2

LOCKE/JACOB'S ENEMY: Do what I asked you, Ben.

JACOB: Benjamen, whatever he's told you, I want you to understand one thing. You have a choice.

BEN: What choice?

JACOB: You can do what he asked, or leave. Leave us to discuss our.... issues.

============================

Ben's idea of free will in 'The Brig' is pretty twisted to say the least. If the Island 'requires' the gesture (a doubtful proposition), then it's hardly an act of free will - unless one refuses.

John asked Sawyer to kill 'Ben' in the Black Rock, and when Sawyer states that he's not killing anyone, John pretty much leaves him to make his own choice based on the information that is revealed to him as the scene unfolds.

Compare with Ben's 'choice' under the duress imposed by SmokeyAlex.
